This painting of an iris captures a moment in time when an iris is at it's full bloom and meeting it's full beauty potential. Flowers can be a difficult subject as they are never still. Even when there is no wind, the light is constantly changing the appearance and colors of the petals. This painting was done on Yupo paper which unlike traditional watercolor paper, is non-porous, so the paint does not sink into the fibers and moves freely for sometime on the surface, making the paint very difficult to control. Due to the unpredictability mandated by watercolor combined with this type of paper, this painting was very spontaneous and rather than my determining what the painting was going to look like, the paint tells me what it wants it's final form to be.
