I love to paint birds because their movement and beauty perfectly marry with the fluid qualities of watercolor. I particularly love to paint cardinals because of the reactions they receive from the viewers. Invariably people are drawn to cardinals because of their color, or more often, because they trigger a memory of a story or associate their appearance with a memory of a loved one. This particular painting captures cardinals mid flight, coming in for a landing, about to alight on a branch while also capturing the unique back lighting which makes them almost appear other worldly as if they are arriving from another dimension.
