This somewhat abstract representation of Irises uses color and paint movement to express the bright vibrant presence of this gorgeous member of the Iridaceae botanical family. Throughout history, the iris has been seen as a symbol of royalty and power and was found in a fresco painting located in King Minos's palace on the Island of Crete dated to approximately 2100 BC. The Iris will forever be one of my favorite flowers, not because of it's symbolism, however, but because of it's incredibly unique shape and vibrant colors. It's a bonus that it actually grows in Iowa and is able to survive our harsh winters and like summer, they are always gone much too soon for my liking. I hope you find the the movement and colors in this painting speak loudly to you as they do to me.
"...they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more." Psalm 103:15-16
